“They welcome you with big smiles when you walk in the door,” says Rose as she chats about L’Arche’s Seniors Circle. “It’s nice to be welcomed. It’s also nice to get out and meet old friends… and even new ones!”
Started more than 11 years ago, L’Arche’s Seniors Circle provides a way for people 65 years or better to get together, share stories and build friendships. It’s a way for people who might find themselves isolated or feeling lonely at times to connect. Though you don’t have to feel lonely at all to join in.
The Benefits of Being Social
“There’s a relaxed feel to Seniors Circle,” says Rita Masterskaya, Assistant at L’Arche Comox Valley and activity organizer. Rita is happy to talk about the Circle as it plays an important part in the lives of many Comox Valley locals. “It’s a comfortable, safe space for people to catch up – and if they choose – to let others into their lives by sharing stories about their interests, their family and friends, and experiences.”
Rose regularly attends the Seniors Circle lunch. “My husband passed almost 10 years ago and I still miss him. It’s important to have people around you. I stay connected with my husband’s family but they live in Vancouver, and I like to have friends where I live.”
Research shows that a key part of our health is related to socializing. Hanging out with others is not only fun, but it’s proven to benefit us mentally and physically. Dr. Craig Sawchuk, a Mayo Clinic psychologist* says, “People are social by nature, so we tend to function better when we’re in a community and can be around others.” He says that people who spend a lot of time alone may have an increased risk of depression and a lower quality of life. “You don’t have to be super-social to see the benefits. Just being able to ‘shoot the breeze’ occasionally can be very positive.”
Out in the Community
Rita explains that while most Seniors Circle lunches happen at L’Arche’s I Belong Centre, coffee sessions take place at Rhodos Bistro & Café in Courtenay and at Benino Gelato in Comox. And when the weather is good, there are sometimes picnic lunches and coffees by the ocean.
Hank, another senior and volunteer who attends the Circle, also enjoys himself. And while Rose goes to lunch on Mondays, you’ll find Hank at both lunch and Thursday coffee. “I came to L’Arche years ago to volunteer when my wife and I moved to Courtenay. I enjoy the Seniors Circle because the people are great, very welcoming.” A retired painter by trade, Hank says, “I love to see everyone smile. I’ve made good friends.”
And when asked what he would say to a senior who didn’t know if they should attend or not, he says, “Come and enjoy yourself. It’s very relaxed and you’ll meet people you have things in common with and also people different from you.”
Seniors Circle visits Benino Gelato in Comox the last Thursday of every month.
Different days, different options
Because Seniors Circle happens every Monday and Thursday there are lots of options; you decide when you attend. Join the group for coffee on Thursdays just by showing up. Each Thursday you’ll find L’Arche at Rhodos Café & Bistro, except for the last Thursday of each month when the group meets at Benino Gelato.
If you’ll be attending lunch, let Rita know by calling (250) 871-6288 or email herve@larchecomoxvalley.org. It’s important to confirm so Rita and her team of volunteers can make sure there’s enough food and space for everyone. Lunch costs $8 and runs from noon to 1:00 pm.
Speaking of volunteers, Rita can’t help but extend a thank you to everyone who volunteers for Seniors Circle. “Many hands make lighter work,” says Rita. “I’m very grateful to all of our volunteers for their time, effort and kindness. They are helping to make a positive difference in our community.”
