On June 8 L’Arche Comox Valley rolled out the welcome mat at the I Belong Centre to everyone to show what the community hub has to offer.
“It was our second ever open house, and we had such a good turn out,” says Hollee Card, Community Leader & Executive Director for L’Arche Comox Valley. “It was amazing to talk to so many people about not just L’Arche but the Valley, disability advocacy and new possibilities.”
Everyone welcomed
About 70 people attended including neighbours, public funders, donors, and other service organizations. And while some visitors were touring the Centre, others were creating art, sampling and buying L’ArcheWorx Collective soups, and talking about L’Arche events and activities. Paul and Randy, residents at the IBC suites, even welcomed people into their suites proudly showing what their living spaces look like.
The Anchorage – A Big Topic
L’Arche was excited to share information about The Anchorage, a housing project in Courtenay that will provide affordable living for adults with diverse abilities.
“There’s such an immense need for housing in the Valley, and we need the support of the community to make The Anchorage a reality,” says Daphne Crowther, L’Arche Comox Valley’s Board of Directors Chairperson. “It was valuable for visitors to see our plans, the land where we will build, and have their questions answered.”
L’Arche Comox Valley gives people with diverse abilities the tools and support to lead independent, confident, and connected lives. L’Arche is part of a worldwide movement of inclusion for people with disabilities as full members of their community. The goal is a more diverse, accepting, creative and vibrant society. L’Arche has 30 communities across Canada and has been in the Comox Valley since 2000.
