Generosity in a Bottle

While some teenagers are kicking back on the weekends, Megan is getting ready to do recycling pickups at her customers’ homes.
Megan Wells is learning about business, customer service and the value of supporting her community – all at the same time. As the operator of Evergreen Recycling – a local home-based business – the 17-year-old Vanier Secondary student does home pickup of recyclable bottles, cans and other containers throughout the Valley.

“I like having my own business and making money is fun, but it’s also important because it helps me give to my community,” says Megan, who donates 10 per cent of her earnings to local charities like the Comox Valley Food Bank.

Making a Difference with L’Arche

“My dad told me about L’Arche,” says Megan, “and how they are building housing for people with developmental disabilities, and I like that.” So, Megan took a special trip to L’Arche’s I Belong Centre to make a donation.

“When we heard Megan wanted to donate to The Anchorage – our community housing project – we were really touched by her generosity,” says Lynda Brosko, Community Leader & Executive Director for L’Arche Comox Valley. “Megan’s business is small, but her heart is big and that means so much to us.”

Building a Business on Good Customer Service

Evergreen Recycling has been in operation for four years and while Megan currently runs the business, both of her brothers as well as her parents have contributed.

“I really appreciate all of our customers,” says Megan explaining that the business has grown to more than 100 homes in the Comox Valley. “I send a note to my customers to let them know when I’ll be going by for pick up. Then I thank them afterwards for their business and their support.

“I’ve learned a lot and I’m having fun.”

Megan says she’s looking forward to graduation this spring, which will give her more time to grow her business.
