Building More Than Homes

When Bob Rasmus talks about construction, he doesn't start with buildings. He starts with people.
After nearly 50 years in the construction industry, Bob understands that successful projects are built on much more than concrete, lumber, and plans. They begin with a clear vision, strong relationships, and a commitment to creating something that serves people well.

Those values are exactly what Bob brings to The Anchorage, L’Arche Comox Valley’s latest capital project that’s providing homes for adults with developmental disabilities who can live semi-independently.

Hundreds of Decisions

As a volunteer member of The Anchorage Project Development Committee, Bob serves as the committee’s liaison for design and construction, helping guide key decisions as the project moves forward.

“There are hundreds of decisions that need to be made before construction begins,” says Bob. “The more clearly you understand what you’re trying to achieve, the better the outcome will be.”

Bob and his wife Peggy invested decades into building homes and managing projects. And although he’s retired now, Bob continues to share his knowledge through volunteer work. Many community members know Bob through the popular “Building with Bob” workshops at L’Arche, that engages people through hands-on woodworking projects.

Bringing The Anchorage to Life

The Anchorage Project Development Committee meets regularly to review plans, explore construction options, and ensure the building will meet the needs of future residents, while remaining financially sustainable. Bob’s experience helps the team balance quality, functionality, and long-term value.

“Every dollar matters,” says Bob. “You want to build something that will serve people well for many years.”
Beyond the technical aspects of the project, Bob also helps share the vision of The Anchorage with community members, businesses, donors, and government representatives. He understands that creating affordable housing requires broad community support and a shared commitment to inclusion.

Bob remains focused on what matters most: helping to create a community where people can thrive.
