There are times that remind us just how much is possible when a community comes together with a shared vision. The groundbreaking of The Anchorage was one of those times.
After years of discussion, planning, design, and review, L’Arche officially broke ground on what will become a new intentional community for adults with developmental disabilities in the Comox Valley.
Surrounded by core members, community leaders, volunteers, project partners, government officials, L’Arche team members, neighbours, and friends, we celebrated not just the start of construction, but the beginning of a new chapter for L’Arche. While the groundbreaking marked the start of construction, it also represented a shared belief that everyone deserves a place where they are known, valued, and truly belong.
The most meaningful moment of the event came when Amber, a potential resident of The Anchorage, shared what L’Arche has meant in her life. Rene, the mother of another potential resident, spoke about what it means for her family to be part of the L’Arche community. Hearing from Amber and Rene was a powerful reminder of why this project matters.
When complete, the mini-village-style development will include 15 small homes, and a suite for a Good Friend and Neighbour (Assistant). The Good Friend and Neighbour is a unique role, providing support to residents when needed while encouraging participation, independence, and involvement in everyday community life. Designed as an intentional community, The Anchorage will create opportunities for neighbours to share meals, celebrate milestones, care for one another, and build lasting friendships, while each person enjoys the privacy of their own home.
