Big Band, Big Heart – Music That Gives Back

The Georgia Straight Big Band has brought the irresistible rhythm of swing to the Comox Valley for decades. And on April 11 they take the stage at St. George’s United Church in support of L’Arche Comox Valley.

Velvety trombones, sparkling trumpets, and a rhythm that bounces off the pews. When the Georgia Strait Big Band (GSBB) performs, St. George’s United will come alive with the incredible sound of live big band jazz. And each note will carry a little extra magic, knowing it supports L’Arche Comox Valley’s work in the community.

The concert will be the 20th performance in the series Concerts for the Common Good hosted by St. George’s. It’s a program that not only celebrates live music, but one that allows St. George’s to provide financial support to non-profits, chosen by the musicians, in the Comox Valley.

Community bands like the GSBB remind us of the power of working together. Each musician brings their own instrument and talent, but it’s only when they listen to each other and play in harmony that the music truly comes alive. That sense of collaboration echoes the spirit of L’Arche – people with and without intellectual disabilities sharing their gifts and building a community together where everyone belongs.

A Valley Tradition in Full Swing

The GSBB is proud to continue the legacy of big band music in the Valley. One that dates back to the 40s when folks danced the night away at the Native Sons Hall on Saturday nights.

The band is diverse. With talented musicians ranging in ages from 16 to 83, you’ll find saxophones, trumpets, trombones, a rhythm section and vocals. The 17-piece band is under the direction of Conductor Greg Bush, Professor of the Jazz Program at Vancouver Island University, musician, arranger and composer.

For Greg, the goal is simple. “Playing music should be fun and we have fun when we perform. If the musicians are enjoying themselves, it’s infectious and the audience will too. The music brings us all together.”

Greg adds that April’s performance will offer something for everyone with concert-style seating for the two-set performance, featuring favourites from the band’s 300-song repertoire.

Each year, the GSBB partners with various charitable organizations in their fund-raising efforts including the Comox Valley Youth Music Centre and the CVCDA Children’s Telethon (Comox Valley Child Development Association).

By attending on Saturday, April 11, you’ll enjoy an afternoon of lively music while helping strengthen an organization that supports inclusion and belonging in the Comox Valley. Find more events in the Concerts for the Common Good series by visiting St. George’s United.
