The Rights of L’Arche Comox Valley Core Persons

Our Policy

All core people in our community have the right to receive the highest quality of care we can offer. Their need for care places them in a vulnerable position. Therefore, Core People must not be deprived of any civil, legal or human rights. Personnel are to ensure that the rights and privileges of all Core People are respected at all times, and that they are encouraged to exercise their rights. Personnel are to ensure that Core People understand their own rights.

Statement of Rights

  • Core People have the right to be treated at all times with courtesy, respect and with full recognition of their dignity and individuality.
  • Core People have the right to be free from abuse, discrimination and harassment. See policy on “Human Rights” and “Abuse of a Core Person”.
  • Core People have the right to file a grievance to L’Arche Comox Valley. When they are not comfortable with filing a grievance to LCV, they have the right to file a grievance directly to CLBC or BC Human Rights Tribunal.
  • Core People have the right to access a legal service.
  • Core People have the right to a good quality of professional health care.
  • Core People have the right to a clean and safe home and work environment.
  • Core People have the right to express their opinions and wishes regarding issues related to their lives, i.e.: how they spend their money, their work / day activities, the clothes they buy and wear, the social, recreational activities in which they participate, their relations with their families, their choice of friends and relationships with friends. Their wishes are to be respected as much as possible within reason, ensuring their safety at all times.
  • Core People have the right to participate in the religion or faith of their choice, or to not participate in any religion. It is the responsibility of Personnel to support Core People to meet their spiritual needs (i.e., to accompany Core Persons to Community prayer, to church, etc.)
  • Core People have the right to privacy, ownership and exclusive use of their personal property.
  • Core People must not be subjected to corporal punishment, verbal, and/or psychological abuse or meal deprivation as a form of punishment.

Our Procedure

The honouring of these rights is monitored:

  1. Through the use of the picture document, “Rights of Core People”.
  2. At team meetings when the growth and goals of each Core Person is reviewed.
  3. Through the annual “Self-Review” and “Quality of Life” review of Core People.
  4. Through the annual evaluations of personnel.
  5. Through ongoing formations and trainings of personnel.
  6. Through the L’Arche Comox Valley grievance procedure to deal with complaints / concerns that may arise from a Core Person, their guardian or family member.
  • The claiming of their rights is regularly explained to Core People during individual conversations in the home and community inclusion programs, at community meetings and at annual Quality of Life reviews.
  • All community members, personnel, board members, and volunteers are to become aware of and integrate the “Rights of Core People” policy in their association with L’Arche Comox Valley through orientation and/or formation programs.

Concerns and Complaints

If a core person or their family contact has a concern or complaint they feel is not being dealt with by L’Arche Comox Valley, they have the right to express their concern or complaint to:
